IS FAIR AND LOVELY CROSSING LIMIT BY INDIRECTLY PROMOTING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION?

FAIR AND LOVELY CREAM AD-POINTING THE RACIAL DISCRIMINATION             Racial discrimination has been a serious issue from decades. With the increasing awareness in the society, nobody is in the support of humiliating anybody on the basis of their facial complexion. It is unethical to judge someone on the basis of their skin color. under British rule during 1957s they openly discriminated dark colored from the white skinned. But that's not the case nowadays. With the time changed with the education system it is illegal to shame and bring down people on the basis of people color.

Fair and lovely cream, being one of the leading brand of HINDUSTAN UNILEVER was criticized for promoting ads  that focused on the fair skinned people being more confident and elegant.Their ads portrays that the beauty of an  individual is directly related to their skin color. An individual doesnot have the right to hurt the sentiment of a dark colored person, it is unethical for a huge brand to sprinkle salt on the wound that is trying to heal from decades. In this way the brand is teaching people the superiority of fair skinned to the dark skinned.

Television has become one of the best medium to teach people new things that are not taught in class.People from all age groups watch television, be it a small kid, adult or old people. If such ad of racial discrimination is being shown on the television  that is televised through the whole country, how bad of an impact will it have on the people.Among all the people the worst impact will be on small kids, who can grasp everything easily if anything is shown to them. It is the time when kids learn new thing by watching television. If they are shown such ad, that means they are being taught that only fair people are considered pretty and confident.More than a book, people have better understanding of things from visuals. So advertisements should be used in a better way.

Business should always be done in such a way that it does not harm anyone and does not hurt any sentiments. In order to have a smooth business practices, one should always keep in mind to be thoughtful and fair.

  4. i don't think there is any mistake in these types of ads because we are the one who promoted feminism directly ans indirectly . and they are just using these points for marketing. in India concept of feminism is wide than we thought.

    1. i respect your opinion, but i strongly believe that an ad promoting such content isn't ethical as it demotivates the dark skinned indirectly by linking fairness with beauty and confident.
thank you for spending your valuable time here.

  5. Yes, it is quite unapologetically and openly racist.

Fair and Lovely is a classic example of market exploitation. The advertisers are not in the business of changing the public mindset or even want to be politically correct about the matter.

The majority of Indians have an abnormal bias towards a fairer skin tone. Those who have it, flaunt it. Those who don’t, remain wannabes. Both men and women would swear there’s a distinct visual appeal to it. This is the reality as of now, whether we like it or not.

  10. Totally agree with you. This obsession with fairness is overrated and big corporation as such should understand their impact and stop propagating such ideas. Melanin is great.
